A preview for 2012

Many big manufacturers are planning new releases in the first months of the new year 2012, the spring season is traditionally full of new releases after the christmas business is finally over. We are especially expecting Samsung to annouce the new UN55E8000, following the extremely successful UN55D8000 55-Inch HDTV from 2011 which quickly became one of the most sold 55-inch HDTVs ever. The new serial number isn’t officially announced by Samsung so far, but after the B8000, C8000 and D8000 series it would be a surprise to see anything different than E8000 in 2012.

Like in last year, many of the bestsellers are in the 55-inch category. There is a clear trend favouring ever growing display sizes, many manufacturers already offer 32-inch+ displays only, 19-inch is pretty much exotic in these days so the best hdtvs 2012 will certainly tend to be huge screens as well. A few years ago 50-inch seemed to be gigantic, now you’ll rarely find anything below 40-inch in a living room across the united states.

LED was the display technology of 2011 and will continue to be the best available in 2012, plasma still has it’s fan base, but classic LCD models more and more disappear from the market. It will be interesting to see if this will be the fate of the still rather popular dlp tv as well. Projection HDTVs tend to be a lot cheaper than comparable LED screen, but they certainly lack the brightness and perfect image a LED screen can display. In the 70-Inch+ category they are still the only models available, but it’s certainly only a question of a few years or even months till the first LEDs with 70-inch display or even 82-inch hit the market.

Overall, 2012 will be a very interesting year for the HDTV market, prices are still on their way down and consumers who want special features like 3D or full internat capability for their TV now get it at very attractive prices. There won’t be any sensational technological leaps, 3D without glasses maybe, but nothing that will be available to the broad public at a reasonable price.
